Imaginate @Saskatchewan Science Centre

Yes Imaginate – don’t imagine it – go see it, NOW!  I love hands on science exhibits, physics exhibits and the like, always have.  But the Saskatchewan Science Centre is kicking things up a notch with the latest exhibit.  Collette Parks and I had so much fun in the exhibit that the cameraman had to stop us in order to actually get the place on film for you.  What we’re showing in the video is just a smidgeon of what it available there for your interactive pleasure and believe me there is something in it for kids from 1 to 91. OK and they won’t kick you out if you are outside of that age range either! Check out the full episode here:

Imaginate at the Sask Science Centre

There is also a whole room for building and competing with paper airplanes, building sculptures that move, creating your own stop animation movies and so much more.  If I had this much fun with a cameraman keeping me in line, imagine how much fun you will have with your family or even a date!  Check ‘em out and tell them City Sleuth sent you!

If you have cool or unusual places you’d like to see featured or even join me in a segment, email, tweet, post on facebook or comment here on the blog – just let me know! Oh and we are now covering all of southern Sask too!

Photo Contest!

It’s summer and you’re watching reruns of City Sleuth on Access7 wondering when I’ll ever come back with new episodes, right?  Well I have some exciting news for you then!

City Sleuth has teamed up with Regina Regional Opportunities Commission, better known as ReginaROC (especially on twitter) and the result is the “Just Picture It Contest” where one of the prizes is cohosting a new City Sleuth episode with me, slated to air this Fall!  You see, Regina ROC and Access7, more specifically me, have very similar outlooks.  We both love the Queen City and are excited about sharing its many flavours with all of you and each other.  We know that y’all have your favorite gems, hideaways, events, quirky shops, etc., and we want you to tell us about them in pictures.  Check out the contest page for rules and details on how to enter here.

Now you might think “I can’t be a cohost” but that’s where you’d be mistaken.  I’m a volunteer host at Access7 and I have to tell you, I knew nothing at all about producing television before I started this gig.  What you will find is that we are a heck of a lot of fun, laid back and we believe in what we do; with a passion.  You’ll have a blast in a low pressure atmosphere, get your 15 minutes of fame on TV, here on the blog and on Youtube, twitter & facebook to boot!  Oh and you’re going to meet some very cool folks, which – to be honest – is my favorite part of Regina!

Get out there, snap your best photo and just let us know what you like about our fair city – heck you may even see it in adverts around the city if we love it!  So, enter today – I can’t wait to meet y’all & share a little bit of the behind the scenes fun that is City Sleuth.  A mighty big thank you to Regina Roc for partnering with me on this – how much fun do I get to have?!

Atom+Geek Science Shop

Oh how I love this shop.  It’s a place for learning and fun all wrapped up in one.  As an overgrown kid, the products at the Atom+Geek Science Shop located in the Saskatchewan Science Centre, really float my boat.  There are puzzles, games, telescope sets, plush toys and apparently a very useless machine, which you will have to see for yourself.

Collette Parks, who gave me the grand tour, also claims to know the secret to solving Rubik’s Cube so you need to ask her when you visit for yourself.  Check out the video here:

If your Mom is a geek like me or you’re stumped for a Father’s Day gift, you can find that perfect something for those special folks in your life at the Atom+Geek Science Shop – check ‘em out and tell them that City Sleuth sent you!

Tee Off (no matter what the weather!)

I recently went to visit the nice folks at First Tee Indoor Golf Centre at University and Arcola.  It happened to be snowing the day I visited, yes, in April, so it was the perfect time to golf indoors.  It’s a really cool setup – reminded me of a bowling alley but minus the stinky shoes.  If you are an avid golfer, it’s a great way to keep your swing for the rather short golf season here or to get ready for that mid-winter golf vacation you have planned.   I also think it’s a great way for a newbie to try it out without feeling the embarrassment of holding up everyone behind you on a real golf course.

Check it out as owner Jim gives us the lowdown:

Then call them to book a time slot in the leagues or just for a really great date-night out.  And, the 19th hole is right next to the first Tee – can’t beat that with a club!

Coda Clothing– Cool & Local

When I walked into Coda Clothing for the first time, I knew I had to do a City Sleuth with them.  The vibrant colours & unique designs alone are interesting but when you find out that they support many local brands & products, you have to be a fan.  In addition to the local brands, they carry products with a social conscience, Like Thom’s Shoes.  Watch the video & meet Colter, the owner who has a passion for fashion and Regina!

Then you need to head on out to Coda – I actually bought a pair of the coolest shoes there – not only are they comfortable & high fashion, they have the steps for Thriller on the soles – so I have some dancing to do.  Say hello to Chelsey & Colter and tell them City Sleuth sent you!

If you know of a cool place you’d like to see featured on City Sleuth, drop me a note in the comments, on Facebook or twitter!

Clean Fuel for your Body

When I went to visit Body Fuel Organics I expected to see a lot of “crunchy stuff” – you know what I mean, the food that hippies eat, right?  What I found instead was a lot of organic food that had real foodie appeal.  I mean, who doesn’t want to try cooking with purple rice?  Food is more than fuel if you like to cook or like to eat.  I happen to like both so Body Fuel Organics is a real find for me.  They have an array of products for those who are vegan or gluten sensitive as well as wholesome food for us omnivores.  In the video we discuss the veggie bins – a huge trend in the states, but they also carry organic & free range meats & dairy as well.  Check out the video:

And then get on down there for a chat with Kelly or Lana.  Seriously, these guys know their products intimately because they choose each one on their shelves with care.  They care about you & what you put into your body so that it is healthy, nutritious and above all – tasty!  Check ‘em out & tell them that City Sleuth sent you!

Cupcakes & Edible Art!

This week I went to Kim and Ashlee’s Cakes and Cookies for a sweet treat.  I loved visiting there, not only for the wonderfully tasty baked goods but for the warmth & laughter you will find from the owners.  Kim, an American immigrant like myself, started the business from a home hobby while she was waiting for a work visa.  It’s the kind of success story that melts my heart and makes me happy to be living in a place where we can make our dreams come true with hard work and perseverance.  Kim brought her kids, James and Ashlee into the business with her and they are all very talented, not to mention fun-loving, as you will see from the video:

You need to check them out – their warmth and sheer joy in what they do is plainly evident in all of their products.  They’ll work with you to make your special occasion everything you’ve dreamed of, even if you haven’t dreamt it yet!  Give them a follow on twitter too @kimandashlees, tell ‘em City Sleuth sent you!
